Rob Sollis Ceramic Studio
I’m Rob Sollis and I've been a potter since being at school in Kent, where my love of clay began over 30 years ago. Aged only 18 I got an apprenticeship at Dartington Pottery Training Workshop in Devon - it was 1984. There I had 4 years of intensive training in clay firing and glazing processes and after that, accepted a job in Norway, production throwing for a potter who exported our biscuit-fired tableware. I soon became drawn to Raku firing techniques and am now a firmly established contemporary ceramicist and sell an individual range of hand-thrown tableware and Raku fired studio art pottery under my own name: Sollis, to shops, galleries and for private commissions. I started specialising in Raku methods in 1990 after founding the now famous Fishacre Pottery in old farm buildings in Littlehempston near Totnes, Devon. I spent 14 great years there, fascinated by Raku firing: the technique of plunging red-hot pots from the kiln into sawdust, where the sudden bursts of smoke and flame create infinite variations of finish on the clay's surface.
My connection with Portugal began in 2005 when I purchased an ancient farmstead near Alto Alentejo, the perfect environment both for pottery and running ceramics courses for all levels. I could also pass on rural lifestyle skills to students, made possible by the diversity of rich farmland and surrounding olive groves.
All these observations and influences: traditional rural farming, old machinery, the aesthetics of Portuguese earthenware pottery - have seen me return to my roots as a production thrower, making domestic tableware fired to stoneware temperatures for strength and durability.

New Retail Showcase:
I've got a display of my work, including some gorgeous new serving bowls (see right) at a special local makers showcase and sale alongside Bernard Leach, at the new Dartington Hall Trust Welcome Centre shop (opposite the barn Cinema). Go check it out!
Local Markets (fortnightly):
I'm so lucky to be out in Portugal as the weather in the UK turns chilly! Every year I I help the local farmers with the annual olive harvest - and it's pretty hot and hard work of course, but worthwhile to produce so much pressed organic oil for my ceramic bottles! I'll be back to the UK just before Christmas. See you then!
